I was inspired to create my first commercial game recently by an old Asteroids Deluxe cabinet I had sitting in my storage unit. I pulled it out to do some work on it and try to get it up and running. I was able to get the game boards running and the cabinet fully functional except for the vector monitor. These days parts for the black and white vector monitors are getting harder and harder to come by. This one had a blown high voltage cage.
So back into storage it went, until eventually, it dawned on me that I could upgrade this cabinet with a fresh new take on a classic space shooter. The cabinet design ins very cool, incorporating a two way mirror with a space backdrop behind it, all lit with a black light. The monitor mount easily slides out without too much effort and there is plenty of space in the back to put a basic PC board setup. So I set out to create 'Roids.
Being a C# developer and a fan of the Unity3d platform it seemed like an obvious choice. The 2d capabilities in made it easy to setup a classic asteroids style shooter.
Just last weekend I brought the completed game to the Northwest Pinball and Arcade show to get some hands on play testing and the feedback was great. So now, I am using this site to document the steps that I went through to create this game, the arcade cabinet and to open up a space for people to ask questions about the game, game development in general, arcade games, Unity, pretty much anything video game development related!
Stay tuned and I will try to cover many of the aspects of how this game came to be.
